About Polyacrylonitrile. Polyacrylonitrile (a.k.a. PAN, Acrylic Fiber) is a polymer resin mainly composed of acrylonitrile. This important acrylic resin is used in the production of a wide range of products, from ultra-filtration membranes to high-quality carbon fibers. While acrylonitrile homopolymer, due to its prevailing polar nature, has unique characteristics such as hardness, rigidity, and resistance to chemicals, solvents and heat, this polymer has limited application as it combines high melting point, high melt viscosity, and poor thermal stability.
Commercial Grades. modacrylic fibers (35 to 85 wt% acrylonitrile) and acrylic fibers (minimum of 85 wt% acrylonitrile).
Uses. Soft and flexible, acrylic fibers are used in several ways: as a wool replacement in apparel and carpets; in the production of graphite fibers; in industrial filters; and in battery separators. Modacrylic fibers, in turn, present flame resistance and are used in products such as children’s sleepwear; blankets; awnings; and tents.
