About Nitrobenzene. Nitrobenzene (a.k.a. Mononitrobenzene) is an important chemical intermediate. It is a colorless to pale yellow organic liquid (depending on its purity), with an odor resembling shoe polish. It is readily soluble in most organic solvents and is completely miscible with benzene. Nitrobenzene was first synthesized in 1834 by reacting benzene with fuming nitric acid. It was first produced commercially in 1856, in England.
Commercial Grades. technical grade (99.8 wt% minimum purity) and distilled grade (also known as mirbane oil).
Uses. Nitrobenzene is mainly used in aniline production (more than 95% of Nitrobenzene use), largely used to manufacture isocyanates for polyurethane foams, plastics, and dyes. Nitrobenzene can be used as a solvent in specific chemical processes.
Derivatives. Aniline; 4-aminophenol; 1,3-dinitrobenzene; 3-chloronitrobenzene; 3-nitrobenzenesulfonic acid; and 3-nitrobenzenesulfonyl chloride.
Chemical Formula. C6H5NO2
