About n-Butyraldehyde. Butyraldehyde (a.k.a. Butanal) is a saturated aliphatic aldehyde with a pungent penetrating odor, soluble in most organic solvents, such as alcohols, ethers, and benzene, but insoluble in water. Butyraldehyde is a colorless, flammable liquid and highly reactive intermediate that serves as a versatile building block for many chemical syntheses. The main process used for manufacturing Butyraldehyde consists in the hydroformilation (Oxo Synthesis) of propylene, in which it is treated with synthesis gas in the presence of a catalyst. Other processes, such as the dehydrogenation of butanol and the partial reduction of crotonaldehyde, are obsolete.
Commercial Grades. technical grade (93 wt% minimum purity).
Uses. Butyraldehyde is used mainly in: plasticizers; rubber accelerators; high polymers; and adhesives. It is also used as: solvent; intermediate for paints; synthetic flavoring agent in foods and pharmaceuticals; and fragrance intermediate for cosmetics;
Derivatives. N-butanol; n-butyric acid; n-butylamines; butyl acrylates; and 2-ethylhexanol.
