M-Xylene (a.k.a. Metaxylene) is an aromatic hydrocarbon and isomer of o-xylene and p-xylene, with methyl groups in the positions 1 and 3 of the benzene ring. A mixture of xylene isomers and ethylbenzene is produced by catalytic reforming of naphtha and toluene dispropornation. The m- isomer is recovered through crystallization or solvent extraction. m-Xylene is mainly used in the production of isophthalic acid, sophthalonitrile and xylidine. It is also employed as solvent in the paints and coatings industry, in the composition of insecticides and fungicides, and as aviation fuel.
