MDI (a.k.a. Methylene Diphenyl Diisocyanate) is an aromatic diisocyanate widely applied in the production of polyurethanes. It is produced by the reaction of aniline and formaldehyde, using hydrochloric acid as catalyst, yielding diamine precursors, which are then treated with phosgene, resulting in MDI. It appears as a light-yellow, fused solid, which is soluble in acetone, benzene, kerosene, and nitrobenzene.
