Magnesium Sulfate (a.k.a. Epsom Salt) is a magnesium salt having sulfate as the counterion. In nature it does not occurs in its anhydrous form, only in hydrated compositions, being MgSO4 ・ 7 one of the most stable and commercially important. In many countries MgSO4 is produced from magnesite, dolomite, seawater magnesia, or other magnesium minerals. It is used as nutrient in agricultural operations and as an effective laxative. It is administered intravenously in sea sickness, hypertension, and to lower the intracranial pressure.
