Isononyl Alcohol is mainly used for the manufacturing of high molecular weight plasticizers (mainly esters), employed in construction; home dressing; insulation; automotive parts; electrical wiring and cables; adult hygiene products; and disposable diapers.
Those plasticizers are recognized to enhance the capabilities of thermoplastics, generating the so called performance plastics. They are specially used in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) formulations for improving its workability or to change its properties, making the final PVC suitable to a new range of applications.
A remaining portion of Isononanol world production is employed to produce textile additives, as well as other chemical products.
Isononanol (a.k.a. isononyl alcohol) is generally a mixture of aliphatic, branched alcohol isomers of molecular formula C9H20O. It is included in the group of plasticizer alcohols, which includes mostly branched aliphatic alcohols with chain length ranging from 6 to 13 carbons (e.g. 2-Ethylhexanol, the major plasticizer alcohol in the world). The mixture of Isononanol isomers usually includes methyloctanols, ethylheptanols and propylhexanols, as well as dimethylheptanols and trimethylhexanols. The presence and the amounts of each aforementioned compounds is dependent on the feed and catalyst employed in the production process.
