About Hexene-1. Hexene (a.k.a. Hexenes) refers to a group of alkene isomers with molecular formula C6H12. The most important Hexene is 1-Hexene, which is largely employed as a comonomer in the production of polymers. 1-Hexene is a clear colorless liquid with a petroleum like odor, soluble in most organic solvents but insoluble in water. Hexenes, excluding 1-Hexene, are produced from the dehydration of their respective hexanol. Obtained mainly by wax cracking in the past, currently, 1-Hexene is most commonly manufactured via ethylene oligomerization.
Commercial Grades. 95%; 99%; and research grade.
Uses. 1-Hexene imparts tear resistance and other desirable properties to polyethylene, making its major use as a comonomer in the production of high density polyethylene (HDPE) and linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE). It is also employed as solvent; paint thinner; chemical reaction medium; and in the synthesis of flavors, perfumes, dyes and resins.
