Dinitrotoluene (a.k.a. DNT) refers to a group of isomers produced by dinitration of toluene. The 2,4- and 2,6 isomers are obtained in greater quantities from this reaction, with concentrations of 75 wt% and 19 wt%, respectively. The dinitrotoluenes are carcinogenic and a moderate fire and explosion hazard when exposed to heat or flame. 2,4-Dinitrotoluene is an intermediate used in the manufacture of toluene diisocyanate (TDI) and dyestuffs. Dinitrotoluene is also used as the precursor of trinitrotoluene (TNT), a common explosive.
