Specialty Chemicals

Specialty chemicals, also referred to as specialties, are chemical substances – unique molecules or formulations – commercialized based on their particular performance or function, not on their chemical composition as regular commodity chemicals. The Society of Chemical Manufacturers and Affiliates states that “specialty chemicals differ from commodity chemicals in that each one may have only one or two uses, while commodities may have dozens of different applications for each chemical.”

In a broad sense, specialty chemicals can be divided into categories related to their function or the market in which they are used. In this context, specialty polymers, electronic chemicals, surfactants, construction chemicals, industrial cleaners, flavors and fragrances, specialty coatings are some examples of major specialty chemicals segments.
