The uses and applications of Tetrachloroethylene may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Tetrachloroethylene are purified grade; technical grade; United States Pharmacopeia (USP) grade; spectrophotometric grade; and dry-cleaning grade.

About Tetrachloroethylene. Tetrachloroethylene (a.k.a. PERC) is a colorless liquid with a mild, etherlike odor. It is miscible with most organic solvents and is insoluble in water. It is the most stable of the chlorinated ethylenes and ethanes, requiring few stabilizers and having no flash point.

Tetrachloroethylene should be carefully analyzed for water, free acid, and stabilizers before being stored or transported over longer periods of time, because decomposition may lead to excessive corrosion. It may be stored in mild steel tanks that are dry, free of rust, and equipped with a chemical vent dryer (such as calcium chloride) and controlled evaporation vent. It should not be brought into contact with tanks made of aluminum. Tetrachloroethylene is shipped by barge, tank car and tank truck.

Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Tetrachloroethylene are listed below.

  • Propane/ethane/propylene dichloride + chlorine (chlorinolysis),
  • Ethylene dichloride + chlorine + oxygen (oxychlorination/dehydrochlorination),
  • Acetylene + chlorine (addition/dehydrochlorination)

The uses and applications of Tetrachloroethylene may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Tetrachloroethylene are purified grade; technical grade; United States Pharmacopeia (USP) grade; spectrophotometric grade; and dry-cleaning grade.
