Sorbitol (a.k.a. Glucitol) is an organic compound, in the alcohol class, more specifically a sugar alcohol. It is an isomer of mannitol, however the two have different characteristics and uses. Sorbitol is a white, odorless crystal powder, soluble in water and in most organic solvents. It was first discovered in 1868, however it only gained commercial importance in the 1950s, when it started being used as a sweetening agent in the food industry.
