About Sodium Formate. Sodium Formate (a.k.a. Sodium Methanoate) is a hygroscopic organic white salt that is soluble in water and glycerol. It is combustible only under specific conditions but finely dispersed particles may form explosive mixtures in air. The salt is non-toxic, but when decomposed by heat, produces carbon monoxide and hydrogen, an explosive gas. It also decomposes when in contact with acids, producing formic acid vapors.
It should be stored away from strong acids, in a cool, dry and ventilated place, and in a tightly closed container. It is necessary protects against physical damage and protects from moisture.
Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Sodium Formate are listed below.
- Isobutyraldehyde + formaldehyde (aldol condensation/Cannizzaro reaction; byproduct of neopentyl glycol production),
- Isobutyraldehyde + formaldehyde (condensation/Cannizzaro reaction/ester formation; byproduct of neopentyl glycol monohydroxypivalate production),
- Acetaldehyde + formaldehyde (aldol condensation/Cannizzaro reaction; byproduct of pentaerythritol production),
- Sodium hydroxide + carbon monoxide (basecatalysed carbonylation),
- n-butyraldehyde + formaldehyde (aldol condensation/Cannizzaro reaction; byproduct of trimethylolpropane production)
The uses and applications of Sodium Formate may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Sodium Formate are technical grade; and CP grade.
Formic Acid Sodium Salt is used to buffer strong mineral acids to higher pH, for dyeing and printing fabrics, tanning leather, pickling baths, in silage fermentation additives, as an electroplating agent, a mordant, and astringent. Besides that, it is employed in analytical chemistry to precipitate noble metals.
