About Sodium Chlorate. Sodium Chlorate (a.k.a. Chlorate of Soda) is an inorganic salt, with colorless crystals, odorless and cooling/saline taste, and soluble in water and most organic solvents. Due to its high oxidizing power, sodium chlorate is hardly found in nature. Its first use date to the beginning of the twentieth century; however, it only began being industrially produced by the end of the 1960s. Chlorate of Soda's main uses derive from its oxidizing characteristics, and its main application is as a bleaching agent in a variety of processes.
The commercial-scale synthesis of Sodium Chlorate is mainly based on the electrolysis of a hot sodium chloride solution - similar to the widespread chlor-alkali processes. The main difference relies on the fact that there is no need for preventing the reaction between chlorine and hydroxide ions. The on-purpose synthesis of sodium chlorate through chemical reactions is not commonly employed on an industrial scale.
Sodium chlorate is immensely hygroscopic, so in transportation and/or storage it absorbs water and undergoes slow changes in structure. Its transportation and storage should be done in hermetically closed containments. Due to its high oxidizing power, it should be kept away from organic compounds, as well as strong bases and acids, potentially starting fires or even causing explosions if mixed together. Sodium Chlorate is transported in by rail, road, sea, and air (sample quantities). It is usually packed in super sacks made of polypropylene or polyethylene, with capacities of 1,000 to 1,250 kg. Packing in small metal drums is also a possibility.
Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Sodium Chlorate are listed below.
- Sodium chloride (electrolytic oxidation)
The uses and applications of Sodium Chlorate may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Sodium Chlorate are technical grade and chemically pure (CP) grade, in the form of powder or crystals.
