About Sodium Carbonate. Sodium Carbonate (a.k.a. Soda Ash, Na2CO3) is a white, odorless, and water-soluble inorganic salt. It is obtained in anhydrous and three hydrated (mono, hepta, and decahydrate) forms. Due to its high production at a moderately low cost in the Solvay process in conjunction with its alkaline properties, sodium carbonate is used in the manufacturing of a variety of products, such as paper, glass, soaps, and detergents.

Sodium Carbonate is immensely hygroscopic, so in transportation and/or storage it absorbs water and undergoes slow changes in structure. Its transportation and storage should be done in hermetically closed containments. It is not flammable and has low toxicity. Two types of tanker vehicles are used for bulk deliveries, tipper and non-tipper, and both are discharged pneumatically. Standard packages are 25 kg LDPE bags and 1000 kg coated woven polypropylene. Transport by water is made by vessels with capacities from 1200 to 5000 t, being predominantly equipped with box-type dry cargo holds and ungeared, and by ungeared barges with capacities ranging from 250 to 1500 t.

Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Sodium Carbonate are listed below.

  • Extraction from the mining deposits (such as trona and nahcolite deposits),
  • Sodium chloride + ammonia + limestone (Solvay process; ammonia-soda process),
  • Steam reformed carbon dioxide + sodium chloride
  • Limestone and coal, with the addition of sulfuric acid (Leblanc process)

The uses and applications of Sodium Carbonate may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Sodium Carbonate are technical grade (99.9% minimum purity); light commercial grade (containing less than 0.5% of sodium chloride); and heavy commercial grade (monohydrated sodium carbonate - Na2CO3.H2O).
