Selenium is used mainly in glass and pigments manufacturing. It is also employed as: steel and copper degasifier and machinability improver; iron/copper/lead/nickel alloy ingredient; micronutrient in diverse agricultural products; rectifier in electronic products (such as TVs, cameras, computer cores and others); and photoconductor for photocopiers, photocells and temperature gauges). Also it is used in pharmaceutical industry; shampoos (selenium sulfide); and fungicides.

Selenium (a.k.a. Se) is found as a red amorphous powder, insoluble in water. Selenium in its free form is rarely found in nature, the chalcogen occurs accompanied by other elements, mainly in sulfidic ores. The element was discovered in 1817, however its commercial production only started in early twentieth century. Its main uses are in the glass, agricultural and metallurgy industries.

Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Selenium are listed below.

  • Copper anodic slimes + sodium carbonate + sodium hydroxide + hydrochloric acid (sulfating roast process/hydrometallurgical refining; coproduced with copper)
  • Selenium recycling (usually selenium present in rectifiers and photocopying drums)

The uses and applications of Selenium may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Selenium are commercial grade (99% minimum purity); pigment grade (99.7% minimum purity); high-purity grade (up to 99.999%); and ultra-high purity grade (99.999% to 99.9999%).
