The uses and applications of Polystyrene Waste may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Polystyrene Waste are General Purpose Polystyrene (GPPS); High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS); Expandable Polystyrene (EPS), in the forms of molded foam; expanded beads; and resins.

About Polystyrene. Polystyrene Waste includes parings, scrap, and other types of wastes from the production and use of Polystyrene, a versatile polymer with a wide range of applications. PS waste can be used as material for recycling, both physical, employing thermal melting and forming, and chemical, using pyrolysis or hydrogenation cracking to obtain raw material for new PS products. The waste can even be incinerated, in thermal recycling, delivering energy to another production process and generating almost no toxic residues. To achieve the best results, Polystyrene Waste must be cleaned and sorted into grades before entering the recycling process.

It can be transported in bags, containers, silo vehicles, and others. In case of Expandable Polystyrene (EPS), the storage should be made in a well ventilated place, since pentane can naturally evolve from EPS as a gas into atmosphere and is flammable at low concentration (1.3% volume in air).

As previously mentioned, Polystyrene Waste can be used for physical and chemical recycling, thus generating raw material for new PS products. It also can be thermally recycled for energy generation. In addition, products that cannot be recycled to produce the same products can be used for another destination.
