About Phosphorus Oxychloride. Phosphorus Oxychloride (a.k.a. Phosphoryl Trichloride, Trichlorophosphate) is a colorless to brown fuming liquid with a pungent odor, obtained by oxidation of phosphorus trichloride with oxygen (including air feedstock) in batch or continuous industrial process. It can be dangerous as it is corrosive to the eyes, skin, and throat, requiring a well-ventilated environment and protective equipment for handling.
Phosphorus Oxychloride must be stored in cool, dry, and well-ventilated area, away from ignition sources and incompatible materials such as acids, alkali metals, alkalies, and alcohols. It can be transported in drums with polyethylene liners, and in lead-lined or stainless steel heated tank cars or tanker trucks. It also can be stored and shipped in 3.8 L or smaller glass containers. Bulk shipments of this chemical occur in nickel-clad tank cars of 15,000-30,000 L each. Moreover, equipment made from glass and glass-lined steel is often used for this material storage.
Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Phosphorus Oxychloride are listed below.
- Phosphorus trichloride + oxygen (oxidation),
- Phosphorus pentoxide + phosphorus trichloride + chlorine (reaction)
The uses and applications of Phosphorus Oxychloride may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Phosphorus Oxychloride are commercially grade (ca. 99.5 % POCl3) and technical grade (over 99.999% purity).
Phosphorus Oxychloride can be applied in the production of phosphate esters, plasticizers, hydraulic fluids, gasoline additives, and fire retardants. It can also be used as a reagent in Vilsmeier reactions and chlorinations, as a semiconductor dopant, as a starch crosslinking agent, and as a catalyst.
