Commercial Grades. Grades vary in freezing points between temperatures of 25, 29, 30, 30.5°c, etc
Uses. O-Cresol is used mainly as disinfectant.
- o/p-Chlorotoluene (hydrolysis/fractionation, coproduced with m/p-cresol)
- Cresylic acid (fractionation, coproduced with phenol/ m/p-cresol/xylenol, mixed)
- o-Chlorotoluene (base-catalysed hydrolysis, coproduced with m-cresol)
- Phenol + methanol (orthoalkylation, coproduced with 2,6-xylenol)
- p-Toluenesulfonic acid (alkali fusion, byproduct of p-cresol production)
Derivatives. O-Cresol is used as raw material in the production of the following chemicals: Acid Orange 51; Acid Red 131; Acid Violet 54; Acid Yellow 65; undecane; p-chloro-o-cresol; o-cresotic acid; o-cresyl glycidyl ether; 4,6-dinitro-o-cresol; Disperse Yellow 76; novolac resins; resol resins; and tetrabromo-o-cresol.
