About Nitrogen Gas. Nitrogen (a.k.a. N2) is an inert gas (non-flammable) gas used as a utility in industrial plants. Inert gases basically prevent undesirable chemical reactions from happening. Nitrogen and, to a lesser extent, argon, are the most common inert gases used in the chemical industry, due to their high natural abundance and low relative cost.
Millions of tons of Nitrogen are isolated from atmospheric air every year, through different separation processes according to the production scale and purity required. The production of large quantities of relatively pure Nitrogen is carried out, mostly, through cryogenic distillation. On the other hand, moderate volumes of low purity Nitrogen are commonly produced via pressure swing adsorption and membrane permeation. Finally, hydrocarbon combustion processes are used mainly in heat treatments when there are residual contaminants.
Most of Nitrogen is produced on site, for local consumption (captive Nitrogen), however it may be stored and transported as a gas or liquid, at cryogenic temperatures. High pressure cylinders or cylinder clusters can be used for storage/shipping of small quantities of Nitrogen gas. Liquid Nitrogen, in turn, can be transported/shipped in storage vessels (small quantities) or road and rail tankers (large quantities).
The uses and applications of Nitrogen may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Nitrogen are Low-purity (90 to 99.9%), HIgh-purity (99.998%), Ultra-high purity (99.999%)
Nitrogen is mainly used in metallurgy; as alloy constituent; scavenging and protective gas; and in heat treatment. It is also used as inert gas in shielding and fire fighting, and in food storage and processing.
