About Naphtha. Naphtha is a liquid stream, mainly derived from crude oil refining, composed of intermediate hydrocarbons, with initial boiling point (IBP) of around 35°C and final boiling point (FBP) of about 200°C. It has a dark appearance, with a gasoline-like odor, insoluble in water, but soluble in most organic solvents. Naphtha composition varies greatly worldwide, due to the difference constitution petroleum has, containing different percentages of paraffins, aromatic compounds, naphthenes and others. Its composition normally ranges from hydrocarbons containing a 4-12 carbon chain, predominantly C5-C6. Sulfur is the only heteroatom present in naphtha’s structure, and it only appears in traces. Naphtha is one of the most important chemical commodities worldwide, since it is the primary source of gasoline and other fuels, as well as industrial solvents.
Chemical Formula. C6-C12
Commercial Grades. light naphtha (rich in C5-C6) and heavy naphtha (rich in C6-C12).
Uses. Naphtha is mainly used in the production of solvents; cleaning fluids; paint and varnish diluents; asphalt diluents; rubber industry solvents; dry cleaning; cigarette lighters; recycling products; portable camping stove; and lantern fuel.
