The uses and applications of m-Cresol may vary according to its specification. The main forms of m-Cresol are crude cresol (20% o-cresol, 40% m-cresol, 30% p-cresol), technical grade (95-98%).

About m-Cresol. m-Cresol is a cresol with the methyl substituent at position 3. It is a colorless liquid with a sweet odor, is soluble in water and miscible with oxygenated and chlorinated solvents. This chemical has a role in human metabolism as well as in other organisms. Industrially, it is mainly produced via chlorination of toluene followed by hydrolysis, by distillation of coal tar, and from m-toluic acid.

It is recomended to store m-Cresol in steel vessels. Containers must be kept tigthly closed in a cool, dry and well-ventilated place, away from strong oxidants, food, and feedstuffs. The storage area must not have drains or acess to sewer close to m-Cresol to avoid contamination in case of spillage.

Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of m-Cresol are listed below.

  • o-chlorotoluene (base-catalysed hydrolysis; coproduced with o-cresol),
  • m/p-cresol (fractionation; coproduced with p-cresol)

The uses and applications of m-Cresol may vary according to its specification. The main forms of m-Cresol are crude cresol (20% o-cresol, 40% m-cresol, 30% p-cresol), technical grade (95-98%).

m-Cresol is used as a bactericide in agriculture, households, and hospitals. It is also employed in synthetic resins, photography development, industrial solvents, food flavorings, and explosives. This chemical is also relevant in pharmaceutical applications, as it is an intermediate for synthetic vitamin E production.
