The uses and applications of Magnesium may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Magnesium are bars; wires; and ribbon.

About Magnesium. Magnesium is an alkaline earth metal and appears as light silvery in color and, when pure, is soft and mechanically weak. It is highly flammable and violently reacts with water, releasing flammable hydrogen gas, thereby requiring special powders and dry sand to extinguish Manganesium fires. This metal is the eighth most abundant element and constitues about 2% of the earth’s crust.

It must be stored in a dry, well close and fireproof location. Furthermore, it is necessary to store separate from halogens, acids and oxidizing materials.

Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Magnesium are listed below.

  • Magnesium chloride (melt electrolysis; coproduced with chlorine),
  • Dolomite, calcined + ferrosilicon (silicothermal reduction)

The uses and applications of Magnesium may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Magnesium are bars; wires; and ribbon.

Although mechanically weak and not used for structural purposes when pure, Magnesium is an important alloy ingredient. It is alloyed with Aluminum to improve its corrosion resistance, as in beverage cans. Other applications include using Magnesium as a deoxidizing agent in Nickel production; as desulfurizing/deoxidizing agent in Steel production; as a fireworks ingredient; and as sacrificial anodes for tanks and pipelines.
