About Calcium Chloride. Calcium Chloride (a.k.a. Calcium Dichloride) is white and crystalline salt commonly encountered as a hydrated solid (mono, di, tetra, and hexahydrates). It is highly soluble in water, reaching 75% at temperatures above 175°C. The salt is found in seawater, mineral springs, and some mineral deposits.
Calcium Chloride must be stored in well-closed containers and it must be kept in a dry area away from zinc. Dry bulk Calcium Chloride can be stored in bins fabricated from most construction-grade steel materials. Liquid Calcium Chloride can be stored in either horizontal or vertical cylindrical tanks constructed of steel. Fiberglass and plastic may also be used within limits of strength and temperature. Bulk transportation of Calcium Chloride is usually made in rail cars, with capacities ranging from 20 t to 90 t, trucks that carry up to 20 t of product, box rail cars, and van and flatbed trailers.
Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Calcium Chloride are listed below.
- Natural brines + calcium oxide (precipitation, coproduced with magnesium hydroxide),
- Calcium hydroxide + ammonium chloride (Solvay soda production),
- Hydrochloric acid + calcium carbonate (neutralization)
The uses and applications of Calcium Chloride may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Calcium Chloride are technical grade; Food Chemical Codex (FCC) grade; chemically pure (CP) grade; dihydrated United States Pharmacopeia (USP) grade; and solution with concentrations between 38 and 45 wt%.
