About Boron Carbide. Boron Carbide is an extremely hard boron–carbon ceramic and covalent material. It is one of the hardest synthetic materials known, only surpassed by boron nitride and diamond. Due to its hardness and very low density, boron carbide is used in tank armor, bulletproof vests, engine sabotage powders, nuclear reactors, and other industrial applications.
Boron carbide is usually packed and transported as a powder or target and should be stored in a cool, dry place away from oxidizers. The containers must be tightly sealed and properly labeled.
Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Boron Carbide are listed below.
- Boric acid + metallurgical coke (thermal reduction),
- Boron oxide + magnesium + metallurgical coke (reduction)
The uses and applications of Boron Carbide may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Boron Carbide are nuclear grade; AG (abrasive grade); CG (ceramic grade); and RG (refractory grade)
Boron carbide can be used in abrasion-resistant nozzles/surfaces; grinding wheel abrasive; metal composite reinforcing fiber (armourplating); and polishing papers. As a neutron absorber, this material can also be employed in nuclear reactors to help in the rate of fission control.
