About Azodicarbonamide. Azodicarbonamide is a chemical compound used as a food additive (flour bleaching agent and a dough conditioner), and in the production of foamed plastics as a blowing agent. Azodicarbonamide is produced from hydrazine and urea. These reagents form the intermediate hydrazodicarbonamide, which is then oxidized to Azodicarbonamide. It appears as an orange to pale-yellow, crystalline powder, poorly soluble in water at 20 °C, although it is slightly soluble in hot water. It is insoluble in many organic solvents, but is soluble in N,N-dimethyl formamide and dimethyl sulfoxide.
