About Aluminum Sulfate. Aluminum Sulfate (a.k.a. Alum) is an inorganic salt with white, odorless and sweet tasted crystals that are soluble in water and insoluble in most organic solvents. It is rarely found naturally in its free form; however, it is found in a number of hydrates in minerals. Aluminum sulfate is mainly used in water treatment and in the paper industry.
Chemical Formula. Al2(SO4)3
Commercial Grades. Technical/FCC grade (min. 99.5% purity); commercial grades (99% purity; 57% aluminum sulfate, 17-17.5% aluminum oxide); water treatment grade; 7.5-8.5% aqueous solution
Uses. Aluminum sulfate is mostly used for water purification and drinking water treatment, as dying/tanning auxiliary; photographic chemical; strength additive and water resistance improver in paper production; deodorizer; waterproofing/fireproofing agent in textiles; gelatin hardening agent; and catalyst raw material.
