The uses and applications of Aluminum Sulfate may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Aluminum Sulfate are technical/Food Chemical Codex grade (FCC, 99.5% minimum purity); commercial grades (99% purity, 57% aluminum sulfate, 17-17.5% aluminum oxide); water treatment grade; and 7.5-8.5% aqueous solution.

About Aluminum Sulfate. Aluminum Sulfate (a.k.a. Alum) is an inorganic salt with white, odorless, and sweet tasted crystals that are soluble in water and insoluble in most organic solvents. It can be obtained by the reaction of hydrated aluminum oxide with sulfuric acid or the reaction of this same acid with metallic aluminum. Also, it is rarely found naturally in its free form; however, it is found in a number of hydrates in minerals.

Aluminum sulfate is not flammable and very little toxic, although it should be kept away from heat sources and direct sunlight since it might decompose into dangerous gases (sulfur oxides). It should be stored in a dry, cool, and well-ventilated area in a not pressurized and double-walled container.

Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Aluminum Sulfate are listed below.

  • Bauxite or clay + sulfuric acid (Dorr process)
