Aluminum Chloride
AlCl3
Anhydrous (AlCl3); hexahydrate (AlCl3.6H20); 32°Bé aqueous solution (liquid grade) 35% AlCl3
As previously mentioned, Anhydrous Aluminum Chloride is used as catalyst in the production of a multitude of organic chemicals, by several mechanisms (e.g. isomerization, alkylation, polymerization). Its main applications are in the production of ethylbenzene and dyes. Aluminum Chloride catalyzes the ethylation of benzene with ethylene to yield ethylbenzene, used in turn in the production of styrene. In the dyestuffs industry, Aluminum Chloride is used as catalyst in the production of anthraquinone and its derivatives and in the production of pigments. Finally, Aluminum Chloride is also used in ion exchange resins, lubricants, wood preservatives and crude oil refining, formation of complex ketones, aldehydes and carboxylic acid derivatives, nucleating agent in the manufacture of titanium dioxide pigments.
Aluminum Chloride is a precursor of anthraquinone and ethylbenzene.
