About Aluminum Chloride. Aluminum Chloride (a.k.a. AlCl3) figures among the most used and powerful Lewis acids. Widely used as catalyst, this compound is of major importance in organic chemistry. It is naturally formed on burning coal dumps and around some volcanic vents. Examples of Aluminum Chloride uses include alkylation of paraffins and aromatic hydrocarbons by olefins, formation of complex ketones, aldehydes and carboxylic acid derivatives.
Chemical Formula. AlCl3
Commercial Grades. Anhydrous (AlCl3); hexahydrate (AlCl3.6H20); 32°Bé aqueous solution (liquid grade) 35% AlCl3
Uses. As previously mentioned, Anhydrous Aluminum Chloride is used as catalyst in the production of a multitude of organic chemicals, by several mechanisms (e.g. isomerization, alkylation, polymerization). Its main applications are in the production of ethylbenzene and dyes. Aluminum Chloride catalyzes the ethylation of benzene with ethylene to yield ethylbenzene, used in turn in the production of styrene. In the dyestuffs industry, Aluminum Chloride is used as catalyst in the production of anthraquinone and its derivatives and in the production of pigments. Finally, Aluminum Chloride is also used in ion exchange resins, lubricants, wood preservatives and crude oil refining, formation of complex ketones, aldehydes and carboxylic acid derivatives, nucleating agent in the manufacture of titanium dioxide pigments.

Derivatives. Aluminum Chloride is a precursor of anthraquinone and ethylbenzene.
