Toluenediamine
Toluenediamine
TDA
Toluenediamine (a.k.a. TDA) refers to a group of six isomers of an aromatic diamine. They are prepared from toluene or benzene, by electrophilic aromatic nitration, followed by reduction of the introduced nitro group to an amino group. The most importants commercially are the 2,4 and 2,6-isomers, which are chemicals intermediates mainly employed in the production of toluenediisocyanate (TDI), one of the raw materials for polyurethanes manufacture. With the exception of the 3,5-isomer, which is liquid at room temperature, all the other TDAs appear as white crystalline solids. They are all readily soluble in hot water and common organic solvents such as alcohols, ketones, and ethers.
The uses and applications of Toluenediamine may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Toluenediamine are commercial grades (80/20 and 65/35 solutions of 2,4- and 2,6- isomers).

Updated Reports Examining Toluenediamine Manufacturing Costs

Intratec offers professional, easy-to-understand Commodity Cost of Production reports analyzing the costs of Toluenediamine manufacturing processes. Each report describes an industrial plant based on a specific Toluenediamine process. The report also presents an independent analysis of the costs of Toluenediamine production, encompassing plant capital costs (capex) and plant operating costs (opex). All reports are based on the most recent economic data available (Q2 2024).

Toluenediamine Production

This study approaches a techno-economic analysis of Toluenediamine (TDA) production from toluene via dinitrotoluene (DNT) considering a plant located in the United States . In this process, toluene is first dinitrated to dinitrotoluene (DNT) in two steps. Then, DNT is hydrogenated to TDA.

Dinitrotoluene Production

This feasibility study provides an economic analysis of Dinitrotoluene (DNT) production from toluene and nitric acid in the United States via a two-step nitration process. Initially, nitric and sulfuric acids are reacted with toluene to form mononitrotoluene, which is further nitrated to produce DNT.

The cost analyses presented in the report DNT E11A target a 220 kta (kilometric tons per annum) United States-based plant. For those interested in cost analyses considering other plant capacities and/or locations, Intratec offers a customized analysis as an optional feature.

Toluene Diisocyanate Production from DNT, CO and Methanol

This report presents the economics of Toluene Diisocyanate (TDI) production from dinitrotoluene (DNT) in the United States. The process examined is a typical reductive carbonylation. DNT initially is reacted with carbon monoxide and methanol to form toluene dimethylcarbamate, which is then thermally decomposed to produce TDI.

The cost analyses presented in the report TDI E11A target a 180 kta (kilometric tons per annum) United States-based plant. For those interested in cost analyses considering other plant capacities and/or locations, Intratec offers a customized analysis as an optional feature.

Toluene Diisocyanate Production from DNT and Phosgene

This study reviews the costs associated with Toluene Diisocyanate (TDI) production from dinitrotoluene (DNT) and phosgene in the United States. Initially, DNT is hydrogenated to toluenediamine (TDA). Then, TDA reacts with phosgene in liquid phase to produce TDI.

Intratec Methodology. Intratec distilled its expertise, gained from more than a decade of supporting companies worldwide in the analysis of commodities markets and process economics, and developed a consistent report development methodology.

The methodology ensures a holistic, coherent, and consistent techno-economic evaluation, guiding the development of a report that allows readers to fully understand a specific process technology for the production of a commodity. In addition to being based on a common methodology, all Intratec reports that approach industrial processes have a common structure, i.e., indexes, tables and charts share similar standards. This ensures that Intratec’s readers know upfront what they will get and, more than that, will be able to compare technologies addressed in different reports.

Our methodology is continuously tested and proven by the many corporations involved with the commodities sector, R&D centers, EPC companies, financial institutions and government agencies that rely on our reports.
