Toluene Diisocyanate from Toluene (Reductive Carbonylation)
This report presents the economics of Toluene Diisocyanate (TDI) production from toluene in the United States. The process examined is a typical reductive carbonylation. Initially, dinitrotoluene (DNT) is produced via toluene dinitration, which is then reacted with carbon monoxide and methanol to form toluene dimethylcarbamate. This intermediate is thermally decomposed to produce TDI.

Toluene Diisocyanate from Toluene (Oxidative Carbonylation)
This feasibility study presents the costs associated with TDI production from toluene in the United States. The process examined is similar to Enichem's oxidative carbonylation process. In this process, DNT is hydrogenated to toluenediamine (TDA). Then, TDA reacts with dimethyl carbonate (DMC) to produce a urethane intermediate that is finally cracked to produce TDI.

About Toluene Diisocyanate. Toluene Diisocyanate (a.k.a. TDI) is an organic compound, in the aromatic isocyanate class. It is a colorless oily liquid, with sharp, pungent odor, soluble in acetone, benzene, and other organic solvents. TDI readily reacts with water at ambient temperature, forming insoluble urea compounds and a large amount of carbon dioxide gas. Like other isocyanates, TDI can be classified as potential human carcinogen. The main effects of hazardous exposures are occupational asthma and other lung problems, as well as irritation of the eyes, nose, throat, and skin. It is largely produced, accounting for 34.1% of the global isocyanate market in 2000.
Toluene Diisocyanate Uses. The uses and applications of Toluene Diisocyanate may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Toluene Diisocyanate are 100% 2,4-isomer solution and 80% or 65% 2,4-isomer solutions mixed with 2,6-isomer.
Intratec Methodology. Intratec distilled its expertise, gained from more than a decade of supporting companies worldwide in the analysis of commodities markets and process economics, and developed a consistent report development methodology.
The methodology ensures a holistic, coherent, and consistent techno-economic evaluation, guiding the development of a report that allows readers to fully understand a specific process technology for the production of a commodity. In addition to being based on a common methodology, all Intratec reports that approach industrial processes have a common structure, i.e., indexes, tables and charts share similar standards. This ensures that Intratec’s readers know upfront what they will get and, more than that, will be able to compare technologies addressed in different reports.
Our methodology is continuously tested and proven by the many corporations involved with the commodities sector, R&D centers, EPC companies, financial institutions and government agencies that rely on our reports.
