Report Abstract
This report analyses the economics of a Succinic Anhydride production from maleic anhydride via hydrogenation. In this process, maleic anhydride is hydrogenated in the liquid phase, in the presence of a noble metal catalyst. The crude Succinic Anhydride produced is treated for removal of side products formed during the reaction. The economic analysis presented is based on a plant constructed in the United States.
The report provides a comprehensive study of Succinic Anhydride production and related Succinic Anhydride production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Succinic Anhydride production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Succinic Anhydride plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Succinic Anhydride plant operating costs (Opex).
The Succinic Anhydride production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Succinic Anhydride plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Succinic Anhydride plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.
Process Overview

Product
Succinic Anhydride. Succinic Anhydride is an organic compound widely used in the manufacture of resins, plastics, coatings, and pharmaceuticals. It reacts readily with alcohols and amines, making it useful in producing polyesters and other polymers. Succinic anhydride is derived from the dehydration of succinic acid and is typically stored as a solid. In addition to its role in polymer production, it is used as a crosslinking agent in epoxy resins, enhancing the mechanical properties of coatings and adhesives.
Raw Material
Maleic Anhydride. Maleic anhydride is a multifunctional chemical intermediate which find application in many fields of industrial chemistry. It is an important raw material used in the manufacture of polyester resins, lubricant additives, plasticizers, surface coatings, copolymers, and agricultural chemicals. It is produced by vapor-phase oxidation of n-butane (most common route) or benzene.

Maleic Anhydride from Butane (Fixed-Bed Reactor + Solvent-Based Recovery)
This feasibility study presents an analysis of Maleic Anhydride production from n-butane in the United States using a process similar to the one developed by Huntsman. In this process, maleic anhydride is produced by the partial oxidation reaction of n-butane with oxygen carried out in a fixed-bed reactor, using a vanadium–phosphorus oxide (VPO) catalyst supported on silica. The reactor effluent is directed to a solvent-based recovery system for Maleic Anhydride separation.
