Silica Gel (a.k.a. Silicon dioxide) is an inorganic compound, an amorphous form of silicon dioxide. It is a white, spherical, porous solid, with a range of particle sizes. Silica gel is usually classified depending on its density, as regular, intermediate and low types. It was discovered in the 1640s, however it only began industrial production in the beginning of the nineteenth century. The gel exhibits a high capacity to absorb water and other polar compounds due to its highly porous structure. These characteristics make water absorption silica gel’s primary use.
