2-Hydroxybenzoic Acid
Salicylic Acid (a.k.a. 2-Hydroxybenzoic Acid) is an aromatic acid, with a an hydroxyl group in the ortho position to the carboxyl group. Thus, this molecule combines the properties of phenols with those of aromatic carboxylic acids. Salicylic Acid appears as white crystals or fine needles, poorly soluble in water, but soluble in ether, carbon tetrachloride, benzene, toluene, alcohols, and acetone. In nature, Salicylic Acid is present from the bark of the white willow and wintergreen leaves. Industrially, it is produced by the Kolbe-Schmitt reaction, where phenol is mixed with hot aqueous caustic, yielding sodium phenate, which is then reacted with dry carbon dioxide, forming sodium salicylate. This intermediate is then acidified with mineral acid, resulting in Salicylic Acid.
The uses and applications of Salicylic Acid may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Salicylic Acid are technical grade; United States Pharmacopeia (USP) grade; and crude grade.

Updated Reports Examining Salicylic Acid Manufacturing Costs

Intratec offers professional, easy-to-understand Commodity Cost of Production reports analyzing the costs of Salicylic Acid manufacturing processes. Each report describes an industrial plant based on a specific Salicylic Acid process. The report also presents an independent analysis of the costs of Salicylic Acid production, encompassing plant capital costs (capex) and plant operating costs (opex). All reports are based on the most recent economic data available (Q2 2024).

Salicylic Acid Production

This report analyses the economics of a typical Salicylic Acid production process from phenol, sodium hydroxide, carbon dioxide, and sulfuric acid in the United States. Initially, phenol and hot aqueous caustic are reacted to produce sodium phenolate which is taken to dryness. Then, it undergoes carboxylation with carbon dioxide, yielding sodium salicylate, which is acidified with sulfuric acid, precipitating Salicylic acid.

Paracetamol Production from p-Nitrochlorobenzene

This report analyses the economics of Paracetamol production from 4-nitrochlorobenzene and acetic anhydride in the United States. In the process, 4-nitrochlorobenzene reacts with sodium hydroxide producing para nitro phenol (PNP). The PNP is then subjected to reduction, producing para amino phenol (PAP). The PAP is then acetylated to produce Paracetamol.

Intratec Methodology. Intratec distilled its expertise, gained from more than a decade of supporting companies worldwide in the analysis of commodities markets and process economics, and developed a consistent report development methodology.

The methodology ensures a holistic, coherent, and consistent techno-economic evaluation, guiding the development of a report that allows readers to fully understand a specific process technology for the production of a commodity. In addition to being based on a common methodology, all Intratec reports that approach industrial processes have a common structure, i.e., indexes, tables and charts share similar standards. This ensures that Intratec’s readers know upfront what they will get and, more than that, will be able to compare technologies addressed in different reports.

Our methodology is continuously tested and proven by the many corporations involved with the commodities sector, R&D centers, EPC companies, financial institutions and government agencies that rely on our reports.
