Riboflavin (a.k.a. Vitamin B2, Lactoflavin, Vitamin G, Ovoflavin, Lyochrome, Hepatoflavin, Uroflavin) is a vitamin widely found in plant and animal cells. It occurs in its free form in eye’s retina, in whey, and in urine, but it fulfills its metabolic function mainly in complex forms. First isolated back in the 1930s, Riboflavin was produced for the first time only in 1940, by fermentation from the residue of butanol–acetone fermentation. Over the years, this vitamin has been produced via chemical synthesis and fermentation for different uses and applications, mainly related to therapeutic uses and for poultry and livestock feeds.
The uses and applications of Riboflavin may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Riboflavin are feed-grade (product with purity higher than 96 wt% for the animal feed market); and food/pharma-grade (with purity of at least 98 wt% for the human food and pharmaceutical markets).
