This report presents an up-to-date, detailed cost analysis of Isopropyl Alcohol production from propane using two processes in sequence: propane dehydrogenation and direct hydration of propylene. The propane dehydrogenation process is similar to Lummus CATOFIN, while the propylene hydration is based on a conventional vapor-phase technology. In the concept under analysis, propane is dehydrogenated in fixed-bed reactors to generate propylene. Propylene, still comprising unreacted propane, is further subjected to hydration in vapor phase over a phosphoric acid catalyst. A mixture of unreacted propylene and non-reactive propane is separated from crude Isopropanol and mostly recycled to the hydration reactor inlet. The remainder is recycled to the dehydrogenation unit, where propane is converted to propylene. High-purity Isopropyl Alcohol is obtained after purification of the crude product.
