NPK Fertilizer (a.k.a. NPK) designates a group of fertilizers that contains all three major nutrients that are required in agriculture: nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K). NPK fertilizers have the important advantage of simplified application, since all nutrients can be dispensed in a single operation. Moreover, each granule of fertilizer has the same composition, ensuring uniform distribution of the nutrients in the soil.
The uses and applications of NPK Fertilizer may vary according to its specification. The main forms of NPK Fertilizer are nutrient ratio 1:1:1; nutrient ratio 1:2:3 and 1:1.5:2; nutrient ratio 1:1:1.5-1.7; nutrient ratio 3:1:1 and 2:1:1; and low-phosphate grades such as 15-5-20 and 15-9-15 in wt%. Where the ratios presented refer to N : P2O5 : K2O. For instance, 15-15-15 and 17-17-17 are weight percent specifications of each nutrient from fertilizers with a 1:1:1 ratio, while 24-8-8 and 20-10-10 are specifications from fertilizers with a 3:1:1 nutrient ratio.
