It is readily soluble in most organic solvents and is completely miscible with benzene. Nitrobenzene was first synthesized in 1834 by reacting benzene with fuming nitric acid. It was first produced commercially in 1856, in England. Its major application is the conversion to aniline, which is used in the production of several downstream products.
