Nitric Acid
Nitric Acid
HNO3
Nitric Acid (a.k.a. HNO3) is a strong acid of major importance. When heated or exposed to light, the acid decomposes to nitrogen dioxide, coloring it yellow. Vapors of nitrogen dioxide can absorb moisture, originating the name fuming acid. This acid is very corrosive to metals and very toxic to humans.
The uses and applications of Nitric Acid may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Nitric Acid are commercial grade/weak Nitric Acid (50 to 65 wt%); reagent grade (68 wt%); 90% nitric acid (>90 wt%); and high strength/fuming (>98wt%).

Updated Reports Examining Nitric Acid Manufacturing Costs

Intratec offers professional, easy-to-understand Commodity Cost of Production reports analyzing the costs of Nitric Acid manufacturing processes. Each report describes an industrial plant based on a specific Nitric Acid process. The report also presents an independent analysis of the costs of Nitric Acid production, encompassing plant capital costs (capex) and plant operating costs (opex). All reports are based on the most recent economic data available (Q2 2024).

Weak Nitric Acid from Ammonia (Medium Pressure Process)

This report analyzes the economics of Nitric Acid production from ammonia via a typical Medium Pressure process in the United States. In this process, ammonia is initially oxidized to nitric oxide. Then, nitric oxide is oxidized to form nitrogen dioxide, and absorbed (at the same pressure) by water producing 65 wt% Nitric Acid solution as the final product.

Details: 250 kta United States-based plant   |   Q2 2024   |   106 pages   From $799 USD

The cost analyses presented in the report NA E11A target a 250 kta (kilometric tons per annum) United States-based plant. For those interested in cost analyses considering other plant capacities and/or locations, Intratec offers a customized analysis as an optional feature.

Weak Nitric Acid from Ammonia (High Pressure Process)

This report targets Weak Nitric Acid (65 wt%) production in the United States. Initially, ammonia is oxidized to nitric oxide. Then, nitric oxide is oxidized to form nitrogen dioxide, and absorbed at the same pressure by water producing 65 wt% Nitric Acid. The whole process examined in this study occurs at a high monopressure.

Details: 200 kta United States-based plant   |   Q2 2024   |   107 pages   From $799 USD

The cost analyses presented in the report NA E12A target a 200 kta (kilometric tons per annum) United States-based plant. For those interested in cost analyses considering other plant capacities and/or locations, Intratec offers a customized analysis as an optional feature.

Weak Nitric Acid from Ammonia (Dual Pressure Process)

In this report, it is approached the economics of Weak Nitric Acid (65 wt%) production from ammonia in a typical dual pressure process, assuming an industrial plant located in the United States. Initially, ammonia is oxidized to nitric oxide at medium pressure. Then, nitric oxide is oxidized to form nitrogen dioxide, and absorbed at high pressure by water producing nitric acid.

Details: 250 kta United States-based plant   |   Q2 2024   |   107 pages   From $799 USD

The cost analyses presented in the report NA E13A target a 250 kta (kilometric tons per annum) United States-based plant. For those interested in cost analyses considering other plant capacities and/or locations, Intratec offers a customized analysis as an optional feature.

Concentrated Nitric Acid Production from Ammonia

In this report, the economic analysis concerns Concentrated Nitric Acid (99 wt%) production via two integrated units located in the United States. Initially, a typical Medium Pressure process produces weak nitric acid by ammonia oxidation and nitric oxide absorption; then nitric acid is concentrated by extractive distillation using sulfuric acid as dehydrating agent.

Details: 200 kta United States-based plant   |   Q2 2024   |   107 pages   From $1,199 USD

The cost analyses presented in the report NA E21A target a 200 kta (kilometric tons per annum) United States-based plant. For those interested in cost analyses considering other plant capacities and/or locations, Intratec offers a customized analysis as an optional feature.

Concentrated Nitric Acid Production from Weak Nitric Acid

This study presents a feasibility analysis of Concentrated Nitric Acid (99 wt%) production from weak nitric acid (65 wt%) by extractive distillation using sulfuric acid as dehydrating agent. The economic analysis assumes a plant constructed in the United States.

Details: 250 kta United States-based plant   |   Q2 2024   |   107 pages   From $799 USD

The cost analyses presented in the report NA E22A target a 250 kta (kilometric tons per annum) United States-based plant. For those interested in cost analyses considering other plant capacities and/or locations, Intratec offers a customized analysis as an optional feature.

Intratec Methodology. Intratec distilled its expertise, gained from more than a decade of supporting companies worldwide in the analysis of commodities markets and process economics, and developed a consistent report development methodology.

The methodology ensures a holistic, coherent, and consistent techno-economic evaluation, guiding the development of a report that allows readers to fully understand a specific process technology for the production of a commodity. In addition to being based on a common methodology, all Intratec reports that approach industrial processes have a common structure, i.e., indexes, tables and charts share similar standards. This ensures that Intratec’s readers know upfront what they will get and, more than that, will be able to compare technologies addressed in different reports.

Our methodology is continuously tested and proven by the many corporations involved with the commodities sector, R&D centers, EPC companies, financial institutions and government agencies that rely on our reports.
