Lactide is a lactone cyclic di-ester, derived from lactic acid, and has three stereoisomers (L,L-Lactide; D,D-Lactide; and D,L-Lactide). All forms are colorless or white solids, solubles in chloroform and methanol, and slightly soluble in benzene. Upon contact with water, it is hydrolysed to lactic acid.
The uses and applications of Lactide may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Lactide are reagent grade (96 wt% minimum purity); and polymer grade (99 wt% minimum purity).
