Isosorbide is an organic compound, in the aliphatic diol class. Its structure is composed of a hydroxyl group attached to each of two cis-oriented saturated furan rings. It appears as highly hygroscopic white flake solid, soluble in water, alcohols and ketones. Isosorbide is manufactured from bio-based raw materials, which release glucose molecules to be hydrogenated to sorbitol. This sorbitol is in turn dehydrated to sorbitan, which is then further dehydrated to Isosorbide. Biodegradable and thermally stable, this chemical has been considered as a potential feedstock for the biochemical industry.
The uses and applications of Isosorbide may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Isosorbide are FDA grade; industrial grade; pharmaceutical primary and secondary standard.
