Isoprene
2-Methyl-1,3-Butadiene
Isoprene (a.k.a. 2-Methyl-1,3-Butadiene) is an unsaturated hydrocarbon produced by many plants and animals. It exists extensively in nature, being found in several compounds isolated from animal and plant materials such as terpenes, camphors, and vitamins. This chemical compound had little commercial importance until the Second World War, due to its relatively high production costs vis a vis synthetic rubber manufacturing (its potential market). Since then, methods for Isoprene production from petrochemical sources were improved, and nowadays several routes have been practiced commercially, based on propylene, isobutylene-formaldehyde, isopentane, acetone-acetylene, etc.
The uses and applications of Isoprene may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Isoprene are chemical grade (90% minimum purity) and polymerization grade (99% minimum purity).

Isoprene Production from Isobutylene

This report presents the economics of Isoprene production from isobutylene (contained in a C4 cut stream) and formaldehyde in the United States via a typical two-step carbonylation process. Initially, isobutylene is reacted with formaldehyde forming 4,4-dimethyl-1,3-metadioxane (4-4 DMD). This intermediate is then cracked, producing Isoprene.

Isoprene Production from Acetylene and Acetone

This study concerns the economics of Isoprene production from acetylene and acetone in the United States using a process similar to a Snamprogetti Acetylene-based process. Initially, acetylene and acetone undergo an addition reaction forming methylbutynol. This chemical is then subjected to a selective hydrogenation forming methylbutenol, which is finally dehydrated yielding Isoprene and water.

Intratec Methodology. Intratec distilled its expertise, gained from more than a decade of supporting companies worldwide in the analysis of commodities markets and process economics, and developed a consistent report development methodology.

The methodology ensures a holistic, coherent, and consistent techno-economic evaluation, guiding the development of a report that allows readers to fully understand a specific process technology for the production of a commodity. In addition to being based on a common methodology, all Intratec reports that approach industrial processes have a common structure, i.e., indexes, tables and charts share similar standards. This ensures that Intratec’s readers know upfront what they will get and, more than that, will be able to compare technologies addressed in different reports.

Our methodology is continuously tested and proven by the many corporations involved with the commodities sector, R&D centers, EPC companies, financial institutions and government agencies that rely on our reports.
