Hexane
Hexane is an unbranched alkane. It is a colorless, non-polar liquid, with a petroleum-like odor. It is considered a neurotoxin, leading to effects in the human body, such as vertigo, drowsiness, fatigue, loss of appetite, muscle weakness, cold pulsation in the extremities, blurred vision, headache and anorexia. Hexane is a product of crude oil refining, being obtained in the fraction boiling at 65-70 °C. Like most alkanes, Hexane exhibits low reactivity and is a suitable solvent for reactive compounds. It is also used for the extraction of vegetable oils and in adhesive formulations.
The uses and applications of Hexane may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Hexane are technical grade (50% n-hexane and 50% isohexane and cyclohexane mixture); 85%; 95%; 99%; and research grade.
