Ethyl Acrylate
Ethyl Acrylate is the ethyl ester of acrylic acid. It is a colorless liquid with a characteristic acrid odor, soluble in alcohol and ether, but insoluble in water. Ethyl Acrylate is manufactured by the reaction of ethylene cyanohydrin and ethanol in the presence of dilute sulfuric, or via hydroformilation of acetylene, carbon monoxide, and ethyl alcohol in the presence of nickel or cobalt catalyst. Ethyl Acrylate is readily polymerized, and is mainly produced for paints, textiles, and non-woven fibers. It is also employed in the manufacture of adhesives, in the paper and pulp industry, and as a reagent in the synthesis of various pharmaceutical intermediates.
