Dimethyl Ether (a.k.a. DME), is the simplest aliphatic ether, containing only two carbon atoms. This organic compound has been used in the production of the methylating agent dimethyl sulfate, as an aerosol propellant, coolant and in a number of other applications. More recently, DME has attracted considerable attention as a synthetically produced alternative to diesel, able to produce clean energy in the future.
The uses and applications of Dimethyl Ether may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Dimethyl Ether are the technical grade, containing up to 0.05 % methanol and contaminations; and high-purity dimethyl ether, virtually free of sulfur-containing and other impurities (methanol content of 10mg/kg, at the most).
