Report Abstract
This report presents the economics of a Dimethyl Carbonate (DMC) production from ethylene carbonate and methanol in the United States. In this typical transesterification process, DMC is generated in a reactive distillation and purified via extractive distillation. Monoethylene glycol is generated as by-product.
The report provides a comprehensive study of Dimethyl Carbonate production and related Dimethyl Carbonate production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Dimethyl Carbonate production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Dimethyl Carbonate plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Dimethyl Carbonate plant operating costs (Opex).
The Dimethyl Carbonate production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Dimethyl Carbonate plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Dimethyl Carbonate plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.
Process Overview

Products
Dimethyl Carbonate. Dimethyl Carbonate (a.k.a. DMC) is an organic compound, one of the most important carbonates. It is also a flammable, colorless liquid with a characteristic ester-like odor. This compound is a versatile, non-toxic, biodegradable reagent, widely applied as a special purpose solvent and in transesterification reactions with glycols for polycarbonate production.
Ethylene Glycol. Ethylene glycol is a glycol compound widely used as an antifreeze and coolant in automotive and industrial applications. It prevents freezing and overheating in engines, offering excellent thermal conductivity. Ethylene glycol is produced through the hydrolysis of ethylene oxide and is stored as a liquid. Its role in temperature regulation and corrosion prevention makes it indispensable in automotive and mechanical industries.
Raw Materials
Methanol. Methanol is one of the most important chemical raw materials, used as a solvent, starting material in the production of chemicals and in the fuel sector. Currently, more than 95% of commercial methanol is synthetically produced from synthesis gas, or syngas, which is a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide.
Ethylene Carbonate. Ethylene carbonate is a cyclic ester used as a solvent and electrolyte component in lithium-ion batteries, and in the production of polycarbonate plastics and resins. It also finds applications in cosmetics and coatings. Produced by the reaction of ethylene oxide with carbon dioxide, it is stored as a colorless crystalline solid. Its high polarity and ability to dissolve a wide range of compounds make it crucial for battery technology.
