Cefalotin (also known as Cephalothin) is a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic, highly effective against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. It can be administered to penicilin-sensitive patients. It is commonly supplied as a Sodium Cefalotin, which is a white crystalline powder, soluble in water, formamide, dimethyl sulfoxide, ethylene and propylene glycol, slightly soluble in lower alcohols, and insoluble in non-polar organic solvents. Cefalotin is obtained through a semisynthetic route: celasphorin C is produced by a fungus identified as Cephalosporium acremonium, and is then reacted with thiophene-2-acetyl chloride, resulting in the product.
